The Weaver Curriculum
®

The Weaver Curriculum
® is composed of Scripture based, multi-grade level unit studies, originally penned by Rebecca Avery. It is non consumable and has five Volumes, each of which can last anywhere from one year to 18 months in the teaching. There are also additional supplements for each volume to cover years 7 to 12. Because it is multi-grade level (Prep to Gr 6), after Vol 5 you can repeat again from Vol 1, even for a child who completed the first Volume four years previous. The level of work and specific focus for their older grade level will mean that it looks quite different for them the second time around. The design is just wonderful. Where grade appropriate work is to be assigned, it is colour coded to each grade for easy referencingThere is a good balance between seatwork and activity which creates a wonderful environment for the kids retaining what they are learning. This is because it is unit study based and there are so many "hooks" being created for them to hang that knowledge upon. The goal of the Weaver material is to get the student to use as many senses as possible. Weaver uses crafts, experiments, research, writing, observing, collecting, cooking, dissecting, discussing, drama and more. With this style of learning, retention jumps from the 25% using workbooks, to up to 90%! I am watching with amazement as I see that very principle unfold before my eyes in my own children. I just love those jaw dropping conversations where they simply amaze me with how much they have taken on board and continued to process still further after minimal exposure! Learning like this means that you often only have to review once to reinforce
Volume 1 uses Genesis as a foundation. Volume 2 uses Exodus and the Law, Volumes 3 and 4 use the rest of the Old Testament, and Volume 5 is based on the Life of Christ. No one denomination is emphasised in Weaver, it is considered "conservative Christian" and has a strong creationist emphasis.
This curriculum does not require a lot of expensive supplies and although there are recommended book resources, they are not necessary. The library is a great resource as is the internet. Being a part of the Unofficial Weaver e-mail loop and of the Weaving in Australia Forum is a great way to pick up really helpful internet links and book ideas!
For those parents who have time constraints or who might feel daunted by the planning side, there are wonderful books called Day by Day. There is one for every Volume and in them are detailed lesson plans for every day of The Weaver Curriculum
®. Step by step, with everything from specific subject lessons, to helpful information about the topic, to creative writing assignments, to supplies needed, to which objectives to do in Wisdom Words. I find it an invaluable time and stress saver when I sit down to do my planning! The official word is that up to 75% of the planning has been done for you and when I look at it, I believe it.Wisdom words is a complete Grammar and Composition program which covers from Prep to Grade 6. Whilst the Volumes can work totally independent of this and you can choose any grammar program to accompany The Weaver Curriculum
®, Wisdom Words has been designed to integrate beautifully with them. I really appreciate the simplicity of use that this offers me whilst having the peace of mind that we are covering all the topics that we need to! The Interlock Program
is a Preschool/Kindergarten Volume which studies Creation through Noah:
Genesis 1-10 (usually used for age 4 and up but occasionally used for 3
yr olds). It's a three day a week curriculum for anyone who wants to
follow it that closely and it is designed to be hands on. The
Interlock can be beefed up to use with both the pre-primary/elementary
kids and the early primary/elementary kids. For advice on how to
do that, feel free to ask at the
Unofficial Weaver e-mail list.
123 Read- Phonics program
"123READ! is a phonics program that is multi-sensory like the rest of Weaver. It takes a child to a second grade reading level. You won't find boring workbooks in this wonderful program. It is divided into three sections. That is why it is called 123. The 1st part includes a music tape and goes over reading readiness. The 2nd part takes a child through the understanding of the name and sound of each letter. It is done in such a fun way, too. The child will make paper bag puppet animals and learn a song with a verse for each animal. The simple verses teach the name and sound of each letter while the puppet project keeps them engaged. The last section uses songs and some coloring pages (I guess some pages might even qualify as "workbook pages" but they are few enough to be novel) to teach phonics rules. Do I sound like I love this program? I really do!" Sharon, in Kansas, USA.Teaching Tips and Techniques is a book worth it's weight in gold in my personal opinion! Even if I were not using The Weaver Curriculum
® I would want to have a copy of this book. It has helped me so much to gain a better overall picture of where we are headed in our homeschooling and how to get there. This is a book that not only I, but other Weavers also, re-read every 6-12 months because it's such a rich resource! In it Becky shares her accumulated, God inspired and natural wisdom regarding children learning and parents teaching. She covers specifics for teaching particular subjects, both the why and the how! And she speaks to personal issues as well which we all face as mothers and fathers who multitask as teachers as well. Thank you Becky for this gem!Teacher's Friend (more to come later)

Regarding the Volume's 1 - 5 supplements:
General Biology, Physical Science, and BASIC Chemistry and Physics are
presented in the supplements. The recommendation is to add a textbook for
Chemistry or Physics. Each Supplement has objective pages just like the Volumes,
only instead of having 7 color coordinated grades (for K - 6) there are 3
sections for each chapter - grades 7/8, grades 9/10, grades 11/12.
Highway to English Grammar (more to come) A two-year program, intensive sentence diagramming.
Learning to Love Literature (more to come later) Includes 79 lessons, 2 or 3 a week for a year.
Spelling/Vocabulary Level 6 (more to come later)
For your Information - Genesis One
(discontinued): Each of the three teaching units (29 lessons)
within this series has been designed to thoroughly introduce the area of science
suggested for grades 4 - 9, with expansion available for grades 10 - 12.
History, Social Studies, Language Arts and Vocabulary have been incorporated
with Science, all of which is based upon the scriptures found in Genesis 1 -10.
Foundations for belief are also presented, as well as Focus on the Facts.

If you would like a closer look at the Curriculum before making a decision about purchasing, you can ask AOP (Alpha Omega Publishing) via e-mail if they can send you samples in the mail. These really helped us when we were trying to decide whether to give The Weaver Curriculum
® a go. I was very sure about wanting to use Unit Studies in our school curriculum but totally lost about the "which ones?" and the "can I do this?" questions. Just seeing the samples answered those questions very quickly for us. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me and I'd be be more than happy to try and answer them or seek out Kelly Huckaby's seasoned advice at Unofficial Weaver Pages if I can't help. Please contact me (Marion) via e-mail at mazzicat@grandyzine.com.
