"Here's 2 pictures of our timeline.  I wish it weren't so bare!   We used to have a wall time line but it spread and sprawled and took up most of the wall toward the ceiling so I converted to this method.  Rather than redraw all the items from the old timeline, we just started this one with new information as we study it.   btw - my children preferred the wall timeline but I like this one because it folds flat for storage :-)"

Instructions: "We took a file folder, cut it apart at the fold and then laid the two pieces side by side so that the tab edges are facing North and taped them together at the short sides. (I left a smidgen of space between so that they would still fold flat after being taped). 

Our timeline is 5-1/2 folders long - I got coloured folders and alternated colours just for visual appeal.  It folds flat and stores in a large envelope and it unfolds and stands because of the thickness of the folder and the angle of each page.

I aligned the bottom edge of a ruler along the bottom edge of the folder (this is where it used to be folded to the second part of the folder) and then drew the long timeline line on the top edge of the ruler - so the line is about 1 inch off the bottom.   I have each folder represent 100 years - the line markers and dates are written below the line.  My timeline starts at 1000 AD and ends at 2100.

I have 3x5 index cards cut into 8ths that we use to add information to our timeline.  As we study an event or person one of us draws an illustration of it on the 1/8th of a card, we date it and tape it on our timeline.  At this size we can fit 5 items vertically on the same year. 

I also fill out a 3x5 index card of "vitals" on the event or person that I keep in an envelope along with our timeline.  These can be used as review - Q&A games - etc.
